iMac black screen (resolution problem)

Windows ME Restart problem
Everything has been going fine -as in installing peripherals & software. BUT when I go to 'restart', it just stays at a black screen and I have to shut off & restart manually (which of course it then runs scandisk afterwards.) Can anyone advise me as to why this is occuring, and then perhaps I can fix it.
